Synopsis:
A group of pilgrims lies down on the thin ice of Lake Svetloyar and begins to search for the city of Kitezh. According to legend, the Lord saved the city from the soldiers of the Mongolian prince Batu, allowing it to sink to the bottom of the lake. If you listen closely, deep in your soul you can hear the ringing of the cathedral bells. In this documentary, Herzog touches on many of the religious beliefs that enrich, enliven, or distort the lives of so many Russian people. He explores the ancient mysticism of Russian orthodoxy and the extreme asceticism that infuses the believer, supernatural manifestations, rituals and prayers - from Siberian shamans to modern psychics.
